Highlights of the week

Just caught up on this slightly older post at Aurgasm. Club des Belugas is a truly global band producing some fine jazz/swing tracks. Two tracks highlighted. Read the post [here].

I Am Fuel You Are Friends has two nice tracks on its Monday Music Roundup post. ‘Magic’ by The Blakes has a definite Beatlesque sound whilst ‘The Satisfier’ by Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves simply rocks. Read the post [here].
-
Not actually a blog, but XFMonline (a Manchester based site) has a free download of The Charlatens new Album “You Cross My Path”exclusive to XFMonline. Read the article and access the link [here].

Whilst on the subject of non-blog sites, That Sound Radio is worth a look. It’s actually the Portland State University (Oregon) radio station but on a Friday night Dave Cusick hosts an hour long show and you can get it as a podcast. This week’s show includes tracks from The Sound of Arrows, We Were the States, Mystery Jets, Head of Femur, Telescope Vehicle, China Forbes, Laura Gibson, Colin Meloy, Bridges and Powerlines, Borko, and Flight of the Conchords. Individual links to tracks are usually shown on the web page [here].

-
Ick Music gives a brief review of Duffy’s album ‘Rockferry’ with a download of the track “Warwick Avenue”. Having already bought the album I concur totally with Pete…it’s a fantastic album that it’s hard to stop listening to. Read the post [here].

And finally, in The Late Greats post “8 from 08 – Ladies” there’s a track by Adele as well as Duffy. Nice one, Duke ;o) Read the post [here].
TRIGGER: Dark
What a week! Four power failures in two days, some lasting for 9 hours. We ended up with the supply coming from a generator truck for most of the week (which, incidentally, also blew the generator and caused yet another power outage!!!). We reverted to candles for illumination, playing cards by torchlight for entertainment and my kids discovered that there are other things in life than MSN Messenger.
So the trigger for today is:
dark [d?rk]
–adjective1. having very little or no light2. radiating, admitting, or reflecting little light3. approaching black in hue4. not pale or fair; swarthy5. brunette; dark-colored6. gloomy; cheerless; dismal7. sullen; frowning8. evil; iniquitous; wicked–noun9. the absence of light; darkness10. night; nightfall11. a dark place.12. a dark color.—Synonymsdismal, cheerless, dim, obscure, gloomy, murky

Highlights of the week
Highlights of the blogs for me this week were:-
- Yellow Stereo posted a couple of tracks from a band I’ve never heard of before but will definitely be keeping an eye out for. They are Fleet Foxes from Seattle USA and the track “White Winter Hymnal” is just beautiful. Read the post [here]
- Lost In Your Inbox posted two tracks which took my fancy. Firstly, from a group called ‘The The’, a 1993 track called Slow Emotion Replay. Secondly, a new – and by the looks of it – unsigned band called Team Turnip. “I Want to Be Someone When I Die” is a great track. Read the post [here]
-
The Late Greats posted a track “Case Of Bad Love” from Pete Francis. Read the post [here]
-
Download.com - having not released an album since 1992 (yes….1992!!!), The B52’s are back! Their new album ‘Funplex’ is out on 25th March and you can get a free download of a track called Hot Corner. Read the post [here]
MONKEY SEE…MONKEY DO

People often ask me which Media player I would recommend and I have no hesitation in suggesting Media Monkey.
So…for those interested in such things, here’s a few of the reasons why…
Firstly, it doesn’t hog all your system resources like some of the more well known software such as iTunes, Winamp, etc.
Yet it is jam packed full of features that you’d only expect to find on the most expensive software packages.
But wait….it gets better…. Media Monkey is FREE.
Yep….Zero Spondulics…
and for that you can:-
-
Organize music and edit tags in your audio library with a powerful, intuitive interface
-
Automatically lookup and tag Album Art and other metadata
-
Manage 50,000+ files in your music collection without bogging down
-
Play MP3s and other audio formats, and never again worry about varying volume
-
Record CDs into OGG, MP3, FLAC and WMA files
-
Convert MP3s, M4A, OGG, FLAC and WMA files into other formats
-
Create playlists and music mixes quickly and easily to suit any occasion
-
Synchronize with iPods / MP3 players effortlessly and convert tracks on-the-fly
If, like me, you buy the Gold Licence then you can:-
-
Use the File Monitor to automatically update your music library to reflect any changes
-
Create advanced AutoPlaylists which automatically generate a music mix to suit your mood
-
Synchronize Advanced Playlist with Portable Devices, giving you the perfect tool for rapidly downloading a subset of your collection to your device
-
Auto-conversion allows you to automatically synchronize tracks no matter what format they’re in, converting tracks on-the-fly to a format that is supported by your iPod or other portable device, while retaining all metadata
-
Find music with advanced search functionality that digs through your collection to find tracks according to almost any criteria
-
Customize your library by setting filters
-
Encode unlimited MP3s without having to manually install a new MP3 encoder
-
Catalogue your physical CDs and use the Virtual CD feature
-
Import and save audio tracks from Audio CDs and MP3 CDs
-
Create Previews, short samples of audio tracks
-
Use a Sleep Timer to play your music
-
Burn CDs at the maximum speed permitted by your hardware
Great huh?
But in my opinion there is one feature that sets Media Monkey apart from all the rest. And that is the support that is freely available on their forum. Not just for problems, but for development as well.
You see, a lot of the functionality of Media Monkey is via scripting and the guys and girls on the forum are constantly developing skins, and functional scripts to tweak the software to individuals requirements and whats more, they share their work freely with everyone on the forum. And at the last count, there were some 13,500 members and nearly 140,000 posts. It’s a busy site but an immensely friendly one.
If you want to give it a try or simply find out more:-

About the Author
I’m Old. Very, very old….or that’s how I feel most of the time. Old and tired. Yet my brain still thinks I’m 19! Say’s a lot for my brain, eh? That’s probably why I haven’t made my first £million, invented something or made much of a mark on this world. Ah, well.
Now don’t get me wrong…..I do have a couple of sucesses to my name. Firstly, I once married a beautiful woman. We celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary soon. Secondly, I’ve fathered two fantastic children. After those achievements, everything else seems less important somehow.
Music has always been a feature in my life. Both listening to it and, a verrrrrrrrrry long time ago, playing it. My musical tastes are very diverse. I will literally listen to anything. BUT….I know what I like and have very firm opinions about what I don’t like.Over the last few years I’ve learnt that the Internet is a fantastic place to discover music, and the Blog sphere seems to get better and better with some exceptionally good music review sites.
So I decide to take the plunge and give you my two-penny-worth.
If passing this information on gives you a little pleasure in listening to some good tunes, then even better still.
If passing this information on is simply a waste of my time….then so be it. It’s my time to waste.
